Hello Everybody,
It’s been a little while. At the end of June I went on a three-day trip to Okinawa with Eitetsu-Shisho and Tashiro-san. It was my first time traveling there. We went there to teach and rehearse with the kids’ taiko group from the small island of Kitadaito.
Kitadaito Island is about a one hour flight from Naha. About only 500 to 600 people live there. It is very hot and humid. Originally it was settled in the late 1800s by people from Hachijo Island, which is famous for its style of taiko. So actually on both Kitadaito and Minamidaito, Hachijo Daiko is very popular there.
Kitadaito is known for growing sugarcane, kabocha pumpkin, and potatoes. The shore is made of sharp coral and there is no beach or natural bays.
At dinner, there was a lot of delicious seafood, as well as locally grown kabocha tempura.
On our second day in the morning, we did a little sightseeing. We went to one of the docks where people fish.
Because Kitadaito has no natural harbor, so an arriving ship must pull in close to a steep artificial dock and then have its cargo carried off by crane. We visited one dock when people were disembarking from the ferry, which had just arrived. The waves were quite sturdy. The workers let us get in the cage and the crane operator gave us a quick view. It was quite exciting!
As for the workshops, I was very happy to play with the kids; they are very cute and very skilled at Hachijo Daiko. I was impressed how much they were able to learn about stage movement and performance preparations in such a short time.
I also learned they have so much energy even when they’re taking a break! (I played ‘tag’ with them and lost frequently).
Later in the evening we went to the shore to see the sun set. It was beautiful.
Even though it was only a short stay, I was a little sad to go when we departed for Naha. I was very touched by the warm hospitality of the local folks and the participating kids, who were at the airport to see us off.
We’ll be back in August for the concert at Okinawa’s National Theatre, along with the kids of the Kitadaito Island taiko group. Hope to see you there!
While in Naha, Eitetsu-Shisho was interviewed by the media, but we also had time to do a little sightseeing. We drove along Kokusai Dori (“International Street”), and also visited Shurijo Castle, which was strikingly red. We made sure to eat delicious Okinawan soba and goya chanpuru as well. I could see the combination of Japanese culture with native Okinawan cultures as well as American and Chinese influences. Certainly unlike anywhere else I’ve been in Japan.
